Rwanda dairy sector has undergone a dramatic transformation as a result of different national programmes:
Introduction of new cattle breeds
A robust insemination program.
An effective diseases control program.
The one cow per poor family program that has distributed cows to Rwandans families.
This transformation has led to an increase in milk from 92,628 tons in 1999 to 254,185 in 2006 and 489,961 in 2012.
The highest increase have been recorded after introduction of the one cow per poor family program.
The national dairy strategy envisages a production of 13% per year.
Investment Opportunity
A milk collection center complete with milk collection equipment will cost 120,000 USD. Every country in the region needs an average of 12 additional collection centers.
The opportunities in processing include fermented milk, yoghurt, cheese, butter, ice-cream, milk powder, ghee, flavoured milk, sweetened milk, etc. The cost of a processing facility is 8.5 million USD.
Partnerships with existing plants are possible and independent ventures are welcome.
