Description

Note that this is a summary sheet and in no way does it constitute a business plan. It is a first point of contact
aimed at collecting initial project information before the project is reviewed. As such information should be given in
summary and preferably in point form

Proposed Project:

Nyeri County like all the other 46 counties in the republic of Kenya has relatively good healthcare system. However, the entire country healthcare system is good in addressing issues of communicable disease including Tropical andInfectious Disease but ill equipped for non-communicable diseases. In Nyeri County and generally the entire country, we are experiencing an upsurge in Non-Communicable Diseases
(NCD) which includes but not limited to;

  1. Cancers
  2. Kidney diseases
  3. Heart diseases
  4.  Eye diseases
  5. Metabolic NCD that include

-Diabetes Mellitus
- Hypertension
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD)
- Obesity

       6. Traffic Road Accident

Most of these NCDs are due to changing lifestyles that include diminished exercises and consumption of refined
foods.

THE PROPOSAL

We have identified 10 acre government land in a very prime area of the county, 500 meters from the town centre. The land is currently hosting a level IV hospital that was constructed more than 50 years ago and poorly equipped. This is the land where we propose to put up a 200 bed inpatient hospital and a doctors plaza.

We propose to have the following specialty clinics /units;

  1. An Outpatient Accident and Emergency Unit
  2. A state of the art imaging and diagnostic centre
  3. Kidney Diseases and Research Centre
  4. Cancer Treatment and Research Centre
  5. Heart Diseases and Research Centre
  6. Eye Institute

The Doctors Plaza is intended to host a wide array of medical specialists who currently are operating in offices scattered all over the town and in non-designate areas. The Doctors Plaza will be physically interlinked with the proposed hospital where they will share common utilities
like Diagnostic and Imaging Services, theatres and inpatient among other shared services. We propose that the six specialty units to operate at a Service Level Agreement between the medical specialists renting office spaces in the Doctor’s Plaza and the public private partnership venture being proposed.

PROPOSED SPECIALITY UNITS

1. OUTPATIENT ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY UNIT

This is a unit that will handle all medical emergencies including Road Traffic Accidents (RTA). It is therefore proposed to occupy the ground floor for ease for ambulance access. Among other important facility in this unit is an ultramodern theatre (2), a High Dependency Unit with at least 10 beds and an Intensive Care Unit with at least 10 beds. We estimate the Unit to cost approximately Kshs. 500 million ($ 5.5 million)

2. IMAGING AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE

For accurate diagnosis and also evaluation of the treatment progress, we propose a well-equipped centre capable of carrying out highly specialized imaging services like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Multi-slice Computer Tomography scans over and above all other routine imaging.Diagnostic centre should also have well equipped medical laboratory. We estimate the centre to cost approximatelyKshs. 800 million ($ 8.9 million)

3. KIDNEY DISEASE AND RESEARCH CENTRE

Many are the cases of end stage renal diseases and mostly arising from complications of Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. Currently, only haemodialysis is being offered in Kenya and only in the National Referral Hospital. Haemodialysis in end stage renal failure is only a stop gap measure awaiting kidney transplant. Again it is only in one hospital in the Kenya (Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi) where kidney transplant is being carried out albeit in a very small way that cannot meet the demand. We are proposing to have a centre dedicated to Haemodialysis, kidney transplant and also research.

It is worthy to note that a Health Bill is already in National Assembly and upon passing it will allow organ harvesting and banking hence making kidneys available for transplant. Also we have qualified Nephrologists in the country. We estimate the centre to cost approximately Kshs. 300 million ($ 3.3 million)

4. CANCER TREATMENT AND RESEARCH CENTRE

Among the most common cancers in this region of East and Central Africa is Breast cancer, Cervical Cancer, Prostrate Cancer, Oesophageal cancer, Karposi Sarcoma and Leukemia. We are currently managing cancers through surgery and chemotherapy. Radiotherapy which is so crucial in cancer management is not readily available and again is only available in Kenyatta National Hospital, the National referral Hospital. Currently the number of patients seeking radiotherapy is so big that it takes approximately six months to have the first radiotherapy session from the time one books.

We are proposing a cancer centre equipped with a Linear accelerator and appropriate bunkers. Chemotherapy equipments are also needed since the one being used in our county referral hospital is an improvised version. We expect the unit to cost approximately Kshs. 500 million ($ 5.5 million)

5. HEART DISEASES AND RESEARCH CENTRE

This is a unit that will be able to handle all heart and heart-related diseases. We have heart centers that are privately owned and still the majority of the patients are unable to access treatment because of the high charges  and lack of some very vital equipments. This centre is again proposed to service a big clientele base and not restricted to the country. Equipment of modern heart surgery including non-invasive surgery should be provided. We estimate it to cost approximately Kshs. 300 million ($ 3.3 million)

6. EYE INSTITUTE

Due to the high disease burden of Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension we are witnessing quite high number of patients with eye complications requiring specialized treatment and among them Glaucoma and Corneal transplant. We are proposing a state of art centre to address issues of the eye and we have an estimate cost of approximately Kshs. 200 million ($ 2.2 million)

SUMMARY

From the fore goings, it is clear that there is need for this facility and there is also a critical mass of clientele to make
this venture a viable business. The total approximate cost of the six specialty units is Kshs. 2.6 billion ($ 28.9 million) and we expect the Doctors Plaza to cost approximately Kshs. 1 billion to put up and which would include the same shared utility services. Over and above these costs, we expect to put up a laundry unit, Kitchen and mortuary at a cost of Ksh. 200 million ($ 2.2 million). The total cost of the entire project therefore is Ksh. 3.8 billion ($ 42.2 million)
