Overview

Laikipia County is one of the 14 counties within the Rift Valley region and one of the 47 counties in the Republic of Kenya. Laikipia County comprises three administrative sub-counties (the Constituencies) namely: Laikipia East, Laikipia North and Laikipia West. The Laikipia East Sub- County lie to the east, Laikipia North to the North and Laikipia West to the west of the County. The sub-County headquarters are at Nanyuki, Dol Dol and Rumuruti respectively. 

Laikipia County comprises four former Local Authorities namely: County council of Laikipia; Municipal council of Nanyuki; Municipal council of Nyahururu; and Town council of Rumuruti.

Laikipia County has not established structures that will define what a village is. However, the County is further sub divided into 15 divisions, 51 locations and 96 sub-locations.   

Laikipia County borders Samburu County to the North, Isiolo County to the North East, Meru County to the East, Nyeri County to the South East, Nyandarua County and Nakuru County to the South West and Baringo County to the West. It lies between latitudes 0o 18” and 0 o 51” North and between longitude 360

Location

The county borders Samburu County to the North, Isiolo County to the Northeast, Meru County to the South, Nyeri to the South, Nyandarua County to the Southwest, and Baringo County to the west.
Area (Km 2): 9,462.0 Km 2

Climate/Weather: Has an annual relief rainfall varying between 400mm and 750mm with a mean annual temperature ranging between 160C and 260C

Road Network: Bitumen Surface (139.3 Km), Gravel Surface (353.7 Km), Earth Surface (573.4 Km)

Natural resources as Indigenous Forests, Wildlife, Rivers
Tourist Attractions as Ole Pejeta Conservancy, Laikipia Plateau Reserve, Thompson Falls, Caves
Main Economic Activities include Horticulture, Mixed Farming, Livestock Farming and sand harvesting along river beds

  • H.E. Joshua Irungu,  The Governor
    H.E. Joshua Irungu, The Governor

    Governor Joshua W. Irungu was elected as the first Governor of Laikipia on the 4th March 2013 during the first General Election under the new constitutional dispensation. Prior to his entry to the Kenyan politics, worked as a Civil servant where he was in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Development officer in charge of Laikipia West and Nyahururu divisions of the then larger Laikipia District. During his time, he initiated numerous water harvesting projects and also help in the introduction of high risk crops in the district. These among others made him so popular with the electorate for his commitment in uplifting their livelihoods.

    He left the civil service in the year 2000 and went to work in the NGO world. He was in charge of the USAID funded International Small Group and Tree planting programme (TIST) that has so far seen over 10 million trees planted in Laikipia over last ten years. He has also been involved in various conservancy projects in diffrent parts of Kenya as a program coordinator.

    Joshua is a holder of a Bachelor Degree in Natural resources management from the Egerton University and a Masters degree in Agriculture and Community development from Nairobi university. He is Married to Grace Wakahora and a father of three sons and a daughter. He has a vision to transform the multi ethnic Laikipia to be a model county by offering servant leadership where everyone in the county is involved in the development of the county.
