Departmental Overview

The proportion of land owners with title deeds in the county is 52.5 percent. Land adjudication is on-going albeit on a very slow pace due to legislative processes that are mandatory in addition to a large part of land in the county being communally owned.

However, the county has proposed to fast track processing of title deeds to achieve 60% land owners having titles and adjudicate 50% of all sections of land by 2017.The county is endowed with water resources in form of adequate water catchment areas and protected springs and rivers. There are 9 permanent rivers, 62 water pans and 18 dams. On average, residents have to walk for2.5 km to the nearest water point

The county has a forest cover of approximately 32%. The forest ecosystem has more than 16 rivers supplying water to various parts of the county. The county intends to improve water supply by establishing 41 community water projects in several areas and by constructing 5 water dams.The county targets to protection all water catchment areas, disseminate through extension services proper land-use practices and  fully enforce of the various Acts and Laws that protects the environment by 2017

Indigenous and exotic forests are the main forest types in the county occupying a total area of 93,692.48Ha. There are 16 gazetted forests in the county. The county intends to plant 1 million trees annually, fully enforce of the various Acts and Laws that protect forests from illegal logging and lobby for resettlement of all squatters from forests by 2017.

Regarding mining, we have adopted the following strategies; identify all minerals which may be in existence in the county and maybe of economic value, give equal prominence to all the potential minerals during prospecting exercises, undertake minerals feasibility studies to determine their availability and quantities and address issues of royalties by mining investors in the county.

The major waste disposal/sanitation facilities in the county are pit latrines which have coverage of 75 percent. Most urban areas are in dire need of fully fledged sewerage treatment systems so as to cope with rapid expansions due to urbanization and so as to prevent hygiene related diseases.
